“The key to business is duplication.”

“How do I duplicate?”

These are questions that we get asked on a regular basis. My short answer is, “train them.” But I realized that there is something missing here. I started to ask the question, “what does it mean to duplicate?”  According to www.merriam-webster.com, the definitions are:

  1. consisting of or existing in two corresponding or identical parts or examples, as in duplicate invoices
  2. being the same as another, as in duplicate copies

So is this even possible? And do we really want our team members to be exactly the same as us? We can birth a child out of our belly and live with them for 18 years and still they are SO different from us.

I think what we are doing instead of developing people. Some of the definitions of “develop” are:

  1. to create or produce especially by deliberate effort over time
  2. to make active or promote the growth of
  3. to cause to evolve or unfold gradually
  4. to expand by a process of growth

Yup, that’s it. So listen in to today’s podcast to learn why development is really what we are doing, and some keys to do it well.
