I made the mistake of asking in one of my groups, “what questions would you like to have me answer?” One of my smart aleck clients said, “where do babies come from?” At first I snickered and then thought, that’s actually a great question! Where do babies come from in this business?

Sales babies, AKA new business builders, come from the same place as regular babies. From having a little too much fun and passion. Sometimes they are planned, and sometimes they are accidents, but we are always glad they are there after the fact. Ok all joking and innuendos aside, let’s talk about what leads to sales babies being born.

My favorite is when our students “accidentally recruit.” An accidental recruit happens when you are just doing your thing and because of your mojo someone says, I want to do what you are doing.

What makes people want to do what you do? I often reference the book Drive, by Daniel Pink. Because, you know, science. People are driven by purpose, mastery, and autonomy. What’s great about this, is that network marketing is inherently motivating, if you are doing things right. Your product helps people, which provides purpose. When you are competent, professional, and provide an excellent sales experience, you demonstrate mastery. And the fact that you get to choose how and when you do things, well, that’s autonomy.

You are the role model for the people that join your team. If you are having fun, helping people, and growing you will attract those types of people. If you are frustrated and desperate, you will attract the same.

Today I’d like to talk about just loving your business. If you love your business, then it’s easier for others to love your business and that’s how sales babies are born.

  1. Get clear on your strategy and approach. Stop trying to throw spaghetti on the wall. There are a lot of ideas out there on how to make sales and run a network marketing business. You will be tempted to do things that others are doing in grasping straws. But do you like them? Are you good at it? No, we can’t spend every moment of our business in things that we love. But we can’t make decisions that make us miserable all the time either! Other people are successful doing large classes? But do you hate speaking in public? If you enjoy most of what you are doing, and you are generating sales in a way that is exciting for you, you will be better at it. You will then be more successful and motivated, which is attractive to others.
  2. Get good at what you are doing. Once you have a clear strategy, become good at it. You don’t have to be an expert from the get-go but take the time and money to invest in your skill set. Do you love making images and posting them to social media? Then take a course on doing it well so you can be even more effective. Again, this isn’t trying every strategy that exists. It’s picking your core strategy and getting really good at it.
  3. Have clear boundaries for your business. Do you own your business, or does your business own you? I’ve been there, where my business owned me. And it stinks. It’s draining to feel like every minute is one you need for your business. And this was when I was in my early 20s. I can’t imagine if I felt that way now, with a family to take care of. Work when you are supposed to work. Don’t work when you aren’t supposed to work. Sure, there will be times where you will be out of balance because the job needs to be done. But it’s the choice you make to change your schedule, not feeling held hostage by your schedule.

A lot of network marketers I talk about how they need team members so they can save their business. And if we are talking about sales babies, that’s like having a baby to save a marriage. We know that’s dangerous. Fix the marriage first, heal, then when things are whole, have the baby. Put the oxygen mask on first. Again, here I go, it’s time to learn how to sell effectively. I know that’s not fun or as sexy as recruiting.

Recruiting is something you need to be able to do ethically. You can’t be frustrated, scared, and unprofitable and look your sister in the eye and say, “follow me!” First, take the time to think about what you love and don’t love about your business. Do more of what you love. Less of what you don’t. Do better. Make some money and start growing. It doesn’t have to be drastic growth, but just small month over month improvements will improve your confidence.

Speaking of ethical recruiting, this Saturday, March 18th Casha, one of our coaches will be running a 2-hour workshop to help yo with recruiting. Specifically she is going to teach you how to help your new team members profit the first month they start. This way you can be confident inviting people into your business because you know you can help them make money, for their sakes. It’s $27, will be online. It will be recorded if you miss it.
