What would happen if you made a goal and then committed to reach it as soon as possible and as long it takes…

I know people like to choose a word at the beginning of the year to motivate them throughout the year, but I didn’t do that this year.  This year I chose that very motto…

“As Soon As Possible and As Long It Takes.”

I’ll explain what that means to me and how I decided that this would be my motto for 2020.  I want to encourage you to adopt a similar attitude as the owner of your business. You can watch/listen to this video HERE.

So here is how it went down…

In November I started writing a book, and I gave myself a deadline of January 15th to have my first rough draft done.  I got a little behind due to some travel, but I lived in this “as soon as possible” mentality. As soon as I crossed this goal off the list, I could get back to taking on more clients… which is my joy zone.

But quite frankly this mindset of as soon as possible turned me into a hot mess. I was in a state of panic, I felt a lot of pressure, I wasn’t sure if I could do it any faster…

Have you ever been there?

I knew I couldn’t live in this space anymore so I decided to switch my thinking to “as long as it takes.”

That ended up not being the best thought as I started blowing off time I had set aside to write, which wasn’t good either.

I had an epiphany that the answer wasn’t as soon as possible or as long as it takes… it was both.

Now, the way I look at my work, creation, and performance, (which can be applied to you and your network marketing business), is both of these at the same time.  My actions and activities are as soon as possible. I need to write one chapter of my book per day, and I need to do it as soon as possible. And I can’t wait until the end of the day at 8 pm, I need knock that sucker out for the day.  

The actual completion of the book, the result, will be in the “as long as it takes” category.  If I write one chapter per day, and I end up scrapping some or re-writing some during edits, then I get it done on the 17th instead of the 15th, it’s going to be ok.  If the book gets published in May rather than April, it’s still going to be an amazing accomplishment.

I noticed that some of my clients were struggling with this same thing of having to reach deadlines and goals by a certain date, and they had a feeling of “If this doesn’t happen by x date…I’m a failure” attached to it.  This put a crushing weight on them that felt crazy.

I have found so much freedom AND increased performance in this change of attitude. It has unlocked a level of performance that I am so excited about… and I really hope this will be a way of thinking that you adopt in your own business.

One of the craziest parts for me is that once I shifted to this attitude, I finished my book draft seven days earlier than planned. 🙂

So I hope this motto encourages you.  You don’t necessarily need to adopt it for the entire year, but I really hope you look at your big goals in this idea of “As soon as possible AND as long as it takes” to keep you from giving up and giving in, or being discouraged.  Really commit to those long-term goals and the activities that create them.
