No matter what you do, there is going to come a point where you have to explain what you sell or about your company in a way that attracts others. I am sure we have all been in a situation (or 100 of these) where we start to share what we do, and we can tell the other person is getting bored. They are likely thinking, “how does this apply to me” but it’s hard for them to make the jump. 

Today I’m going to share with you how to “attract” people with the way you talk about what you do, in the simplest way I know how.

Spoiler alert, people don’t care about your company at their core. They are mostly concerned with their own problems, goals, and needs. They see everything through this filter.

By making the company story about their problems, goals, and needs, we make it really easy for them to see what a great fit we are, without even talking about products.

When people ask me what I do, I often will respond with the problems and goals I address instead of what I do.

Something like, “you know how there are a lot of women who decide to run their own home based business but haven’t had the formal skills training in sales, leadership or entrepreneurship?”

They respond, “yes.” 

I respond, “well, I help them with that by doing online courses, private coaching, and masterminds. That way they can be successful and support their family and feel professional.” 

They nod their heads. They get it.

Here is the formula. 

You know how a lot of [target market]  [problems, goals, needs]? (wait for response) I help them with that by [way you help them]. My mission is to create a team of people who help others with their [industry].

Here is how to do it. 

Step 1: Make a list of the problems, goals, needs you address.

Step 2: Actually take time to commit them to your memory.

It’s not a perfect memorization like a script. You just need to know the main point so you can retrieve them from your memory in a coherent way.

Step 3: Sprinkle in a little vision.

Clarify why you are selling your product and building a team. This can be as simple as, “I’m creating a team of people who help others with their health.” Or it can be an answer to how your business makes the world a better place, in your own words.

While you can’t say the wrong thing to the right person, I have found that there are a majority of people we will meet where what we say DOES make a difference. Follow this formula to see the other person’s head nodding up and down like a bobblehead and you will be assured success in the long-run.
